| Ten ways to get your family active |
-
Schedule an activity every weekend. Plan walks, hikes, fly a kite, or play catch.
- Take it easy. Start slowly and drink plenty of water.
- Invite others. Ask some neighbors or friends to join you.
- Find an organized activity. There are many activities that all ages and fitness levels can participate in. You can enroll in dance classes, tennis or martial arts.
- Give active gifts. At Christmas or birthdays be sure to include a gift that encourages activity like a tennis racket, soccer ball, skateboard, or scooter.
- Get into physical education. The importance of physical education for children shouldn’t be underestimated. Encourage a range of activities that call for different skills, like catching, throwing, balance and coordination.
- Reduce inactive time. Limit television viewing, cut down on video games and reduce time surfing the net.
- Free family fun. Not all family activities cost you money. There are many free activities like a family walk or a game in the backyard or a local park.
- Get the family involved in local activities. Encourage more social involvement by joining after school clubs and taking part in community events.
- Be a good role model. If an active lifestyle is part of your life, you’re much more likely to pass similar good habits to your children.
